What is Migraine?
WHAT IS A MIGRAINE?
•

A migraine isn’t just a bad headache. It’s an intense
throbbing pain.

•

Migraine attack is commonly accompanied by
nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light
and sound.

•

Migraines and other types of headache -- such as
tension headache and sinus headache -- are painful
and can rob you of quality of life.

•

The cause of migraine is believed to be chemical
reactions in the brain.

How Migraine Affects Your Life?
HOW MIGRAINE AFFECTS YOUR LIFE?
Migraines can touch many areas of your life. Without proper migraine treatment an individual’s
painful symptoms can spiral out of control.
Left untreated migraines can often lead to:
•
•

To take multiple sick days at a job
Missed time with friends or family

Even after a migraine is “over”, individuals often have feelings of:
•

Severe exhaustion

•

Depression

•

Inability to think correctly as well as the general feeling of being “hung over”

Any individual suffering from the severe headaches classified as migraines should seek the help of
physician in order to receive the proper diagnosis and best care possible.

Types of Migraine
Acephalgic or "Silent Migraine" - No headache actually occurs but the sufferer has other symptoms.
Abdominal Migraine - Usually suffered by children although adults have them too. They present as
nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Basilar-Type Migraine - The attack that is marked by an aura which is generated from the sufferers
brain stem. These attacks can cause temporary blindness and decreased levels of consciousness.
Hemiplegic Migraine - A rare form of attack. These attacks mimic a stroke, epilepsy and other
neurological conditions. Sufferers can have residual limb weakness after attacks.
Migraine with Aura aka "Classic Migraine" - A genetic neurological disease marked by severe
headaches as well as visual, sensory and speech symptoms.

Migraine without Aura aka "Common Migraine" –Characterized by headaches that occur
on one side in the head and are pulsating or throbbing.

Types of Migraine
Optical, Ocular, and Opthalmic Migraine - These may be part of or a symptom of the Acephalgic type Migraine
which effects vision. Some sufferers report visual disturbances only ranging from mild to severe.
Retinal Migraine - Another visual disturbance attack, marked by disturbance in only one
eye monocular. Complaints range from seeing flashing lights, visual disturbances and temporary
blindness.
Status Migrainous - An attack that lasts 72 hours or longer. This is the condition most likely to do grievous harm and
people suffering from these MUST seek immediate medical treatment to reduce to chances of stroke, coma or
death.
Transformed Migraine - Attacks that become increasing frequent. They are daily attacks that vary in intensity from
mild to severe debilitating migraine attacks.

Who gets Migraine?
•

A recent US study found that more whites have
migraine headaches than blacks or Asians.

•

Migraine is common - about one in ten people get
migraine headaches. Migraines often start in the
teenage years, but some younger children get them.
After puberty, about three times as many girls and
women get migraines compared with boys and men.
– For many girls and women, migraines tend to
happen around the start of their period,
probably due to hormone changes.
– Migraines tend to happen less often during
pregnancy.

•

More people may be getting migraine now than 20
years ago. It has been suggested that this is because
of increasing exposure to things that can trigger
migraine.

Migraine Triggers
MIGRAINE TRIGGERS
People with migraines react to a variety of factors and
events, called triggers. These triggers can vary from person
to person and don’t always lead to migraine.
A combination of triggers — not a single thing or event — is
more likely to set off an attack. People with migraine tend
to have attacks triggered by:

Lack of or too much sleep
Skipped meals
Bright lights, loud noises, or strong odors
Hormone changes during the menstrual cycle
Stress and anxiety, or relaxation after stress
Weather changes
Alcohol (often red wine)
Caffeine (too much or withdrawal)
Foods that contain nitrates.
Foods that contain MSG (monosodium glutamate)
Foods that contain tyramine,
Aspartame (NutraSweet® and Equal®)
What Pain Medications are Responsible for Causing
Rebound Headaches?
Many commonly used pain relief medications, when taken in
large enough amounts, can cause rebound headaches. Drugs
once thought of as "safe" are turning up as the likeliest
culprits. These include:
• Aspirin
• Sinus relief medications
• Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (Aleve)
• Sedatives for sleep
• Codeine and prescription narcotics
• Over-the-counter
combination headache remedies
containing caffeine (such as Anacin, Excedrin, Bayer
Select)
• Ergotamine preparations (such as Cafergot, Migergot,
Ergomar, Bellergal-S, Bel-Phen-Ergot S, Phenerbel-S, Ercaf,
Wigraine, and Cafatine PB)
• Butalbital combination pain-relievers (Goody's Headache
Powder, Supac, Excedrin)
