Axel & Boris founders of Dreamojo: Fund Your Dreams, Together

Dreamojo offers a new way of crowdfunding projects. The founders Axel and Boris grew up together in East Germany, they are no stranger to business and innovation. They consider themselves as explorers – always looking for new ideas and discoveries.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your company – what is Dreamojo all about?

Hi there. Dreamojo is a brand new crowdfunding and groupfunding site that aims to give everyone the chance to harness the power of crowdfunding to bring about something good in the world. Our aim is to build the most flexible funding platform worldwide, which will give our users as much control as possible over their fundraising campaigns. We think that the future of funding is social. Crowdfunding really is the future, and at Dreamojo we want to facilitate the good that can be done with a more socialized, democratic funding system across all aspects of daily life.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your background and how you started your company?

We are both born in East Germany, at a time where communication and innovation were suppressed during the Cold War. We’ve been friends since we were five years old! We’ve both worked in all kinds of industries, which gave us experience in many different fields that aren’t necessarily related to what we’re doing now, but which have still proven really useful. Eventually we met Morten Lund (one of the first Skype investors), who was a great help with starting our own business.

Q: What are some of the projects you are working on right now?

We have a nice project coming up in the next days with Alba Berlin, Berlin’s biggest basketball team. The Fan Club is planning to take a whole load of fans to one of their away games in Munich, and they’re funding the trip with us. It should be a fantastic day!

Q: What are your plans for the future, how do you plan to grow this company?

We want to establish Dreamojo as a world-leader in personalized funding. We don’t want to dictate how people will fund their lives in the future, we just want to give them control over how they do it. Of course, we want to keep building our team and our brand, and we’ve got some great things coming up in that area. Soon we’re going to incorporate some Featured Artists into our crowdfunding model, which hasn’t been done before and should really make us stand out. Stay tuned!

Q: What were the top 3 mistakes you made starting your business and what did you learn from it?

(1.) – At the very start, we rushed into the hiring process a little quickly, as we were so eager to get started. We should have taken our time and made sure we got the best possible people on our team, even though waiting to get started was agonizing.

(2.) – We were sometimes too focused on small details. Remember: ‘done is better than perfect.’

(3.) – We went to too many useless and expensive start-up and tech events!

Q: Please share some tips for new entrepreneurs on how to find investments.

We didn’t find it hard to find investment, but to find the RIGHT investments can be trickier. It takes a lot of stamina, and a lot of networking. We found it didn’t hurt that we acted a little bit crazy when we were doing it – I guess it made us memorable!

Q: What was the best business advice you have ever received and who gave you this advice?

“Act. Don’t talk.” One of the most important pieces of advice Morten Lund gave us. Maybe he was just sick of hearing the sound of our voices!

Q: What are the top 3 online tools and resources you’re currently using to grow your company?

We keep organized using Jira. It’s a great tool that makes it easy to keep on top of our workflow. We’ve definitely seen improvement since we adopted it.

Balsamiq Wireframing is a fantastic way to jot down design ideas in a fraction of the time it would take to make them on Photoshop.

It’s not an online tool, but we find the best thing to do is to make sure to have a stand-up meeting every day!

Q: What’s your definition of success?

“Success is working on what you love.” – Axel & Boris

Q: What are three books you recommend entrepreneurs to read?

(1) – Screw It, Let’s Do It: Lessons in Life and Business (Richard Branson)

(2) – Thinking Big: The Keys to Personal Power and Maximum Performance (Brian Tracy)

(3) – The Lean Startup (Eric Ries)

Q:What is your favorite entrepreneurship quote?

“Genius is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration.”- Thomas Edison

Q: How can we get in touch with you?

The best way to reach us is via email at founders@dreamojo.com. We are often on the road but will respond as quickly as we can. Also, we love to meet people in person and have an exchange of ideas and stories. If you’re in Berlin just send us a message!
