Clarington man builds replica ‘tank’

Watch: Clarington man adds a Sherman Tank to his list of life-sized war replicas. Rob Leth reports.

TORONTO – Canada’s best defended bed and breakfast has increased its firepower.

Ian Baron, owner of Model “A” Acres Bed and Breakfast has added to his impressive list of life-sized replicas – including four war planes and a German U-Boat – with a full-size replica Sherman Firefly Tank.

“I was able to mount [the tank parts] on an ’89 Chevy pickup truck and, like, the weight of the original Sherman was like 33 tonnes and [the replica is] probably about 3,000 pounds,” Baron said in an interview Tuesday.

He began constructing the tank in November but quickly learned the construction would have to be creative.

The barrel is made from light posts and a fire extinguisher. The frame was covered sheet metal from above-ground swimming pools and the track is a rubber track donated by a paving company.

The tank is semi-operational: All the parts are mounted on a drivable pickup truck and the barrel shoots small firecrackers.

Baron’s father was a mechanic in 83rd Battery self-propelled artillery division during the Second World War and worked on the real Sherman tanks.

“We have a lot of war veterans and active military personnel, too, that come and they’re just amazed,” Ian’s wife, Luvurne Baron said Tuesday. “And I guess the best thing is … they have stories to share.”
