North Carolina Sea Grant is part of a national network that conducts research, extension, and outreach to address the needs of coastal communities and ecosystems. It is a multi-campus program of the University of North Carolina System. Its headquarters is located in Raleigh on the campus of North Carolina State University

The temporary student extension associate will assist Frank Lopez, NC Sea Grant extension director, and Dr. David Salvesen, UNC-CH Institute for the Environment, to accomplish objectives of the grant “Strengthening Rural North Carolina Resilience Post-Storm”.

The student will be part of a community engagement team working with communities in coastal North Carolina that are recovering from impacts of several recent severe storms. Communities include New Bern, rural Pender County, and Belhaven. Developing design options for Belhaven will be part of a UNC-CH capstone course for undergraduate students.

  • Assist Co-PIs in developing community design options.
  • Assist in engaging communities through visualizations and maps and facilitating community meetings.
  • Assist in mentoring UNC-CH students participating in capstone class to develop recovery design options.
  • Assist in the design and preparation of science-based communication products for public audiences.
  • Data analysis
  • Report writing

Minimum Experience/Education:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Engineering, or equivalent design-related discipline.
  • Experience explaining scientific research
  • Social media experience

Preferred Experience/Education:

  • Completion or enrollment in Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Engineering, or equivalent design-related discipline.
    Demonstrated research, spatial/planning analysis and visualization skills; proficiency in using ArcGIS, SketchUp, InDesign software, or similar design visualization software.
  • Understanding of flood mitigation practices and policies in urban areas.
  • Experience in leading public information meetings and communicating with diverse audiences.
  • Experience in assisting economically disadvantaged communities to increase resilience and reduce risk to natural hazards.
