Seeds of Discent is a novel that explores the personal journeys of urban farmers whose West Philadelphia garden is shut down by the city. In an effort to save the garden, they reveal much more about where they are in their lives and where we are going as a society.

Seeds of Discent tells the story of four unconventional West Philadelphians facing an alarmingly conventional problem. The urban farm that they are building on the vacant lot adjacent to their row home has been repossessed by the city for use in a grander development scheme that rarely values community input. The paths that they travel to reclaim this lot show not only the new paths being tread by those people migrating back to our urban centers, but also the paths of people who are willing to forge a new way to live.

The story of urban farming has been told from the technical side, the political side, and the personal side. But by putting urban farmers in the context of a novel, author Nic Esposito brings a much needed perspective to this movement that has been building momentum in cities across the country and world.
