Chef Ethan Stowell's Guide to Seattle

Olympic Sculpture Park

The sculpture park is the perfect place to go for a morning stroll while you're sipping coffee, to relax and take in the amazing art installations, on a side of the Seattle waterfront that's less touristed. I love walking through the Richard Serra installation, then up over the little hill to catch the view of the Sound. I’m also partial to "The Eagle" by Alexander Calder. My parents had the opportunity to spend the day with him in 1971 on a family trip to France. From what they've told me, he was an incredibly nice man and spent a couple of hours playing with my older brother, Christopher.

The Woodland Park Zoo

My wife and I often take our kids to the Woodland Park Zoo on the weekend. There’s a lot of green space, which makes it feel like you’re getting away from the city. The exhibits are great for kids and the Zoo really listens to the community and cares for the animals in a way that actually feels respectful and conscientious.

Seattle is known for aviation—Boeing has been part of the region's history for a hundred years. The Museum has the perfect mix of interactive exhibits, information, and just really cool things to look at. It's an awesome place for kids and grown ups. I usually spend the majority of my time in the kids section; my two year old loves playing with the model airplanes. But the ability to tour the inside of some of the great airplanes, like Concorde, is pretty special. And the World War II history section is a wonderful tribute.

The Wallingford Farmers’ Market

This has been my go-to market lately. It’s on Wednesday afternoons in a big park that’s great for picnics. Our restaurants have a stand there, where you can buy food sourced from the market and enjoy it right in the park. It’s our favorite place to take the kids for an evening picnic and grab produce for the rest of the week.

Geoduck at Anchovies & Olives

Geoduck is a Northwest specialty. It's a little like going to New England and having lobster; it just belongs there. We were one of the first restaurants to serve geoduck, which we slice paper thin and serve as crudo. The body—or mantle—makes great chowder. It's always fun to show a geoduck to guests who have never seen one. They’re not very attractive.

We have the best football team and the best football fans in the country. Period.
