Scammers calling people in West Reading, claiming to be from utility

Author

Scammers are trying to take advantage of people in West Reading.

Borough police said the latest scam involved someone calling residents and claiming to be with Met-Ed, demanding money and making threats.

Don’t be fooled, police said.

Utilities won’t call and demand payment over the phone, police said, and if residents do have questions about their bills, they should initiate the contact with the utility.

Police are urging residents not to give any personal or financial information to the callers and, especially, not to send any money.

There have been reports of about five scam phone calls over the past three weeks.

Anything suspicious should be reported to police at 610-373-0111.
