Event to put people first in UK healthcare
The ‘Putting People First’ conference, hosted by Leeds Beckett University, Leeds Adult Social Care and York Street Practice, will take place at the Lewis Jones Suite at Headingley Carnegie Stadium from 9am to 4.30pm.
It will bring together service users, carers, students, academics, practitioners and managers to engage in innovative thinking and lively debate with the aim of developing ways of providing best service ‘cultures of inclusivity’ through putting people first in health and social care services.
Darren Hill, Principal Lecturer in the School of Health at Leeds Beckett, said: “This conference puts Leeds Becket University at the heart of a regional, national and international conversation around best practice within health and social care service providers. It is a unique opportunity for the University to develop and explore partnerships with service users, local government, third sector agencies and the NHS.”
John Walsh, Practice Manager at York Street Health Practice, commented: “This conference is a sign of services and the academic community coming together to discuss with others the key questions facing the NHS and many other services. How do we create the best culture for staff? How do we deliver best care for patients? How do we offer authentic leadership and compassionate practice? This conference is a creative space where these questions and others can be addressed in positive dialogue.”
Councillor Lisa Mulherin, Leeds City Council’s executive member for health, wellbeing and adults, said: “Tackling health inequality is integral to our health and wellbeing strategy – in particular our ambition that people who are the poorest will improve their health the fastest - and there has already been some excellent partnership work in Leeds towards accomplishing that goal.
“However, we know there is still a dramatic difference between rich and poor and we have a long way to go in narrowing the health and wellbeing gap. By coming together like this we can share our best thoughts and ideas about how we can move closer to making Leeds a city where all our residents have the opportunity to live healthy, active lives.”
The conference will include talks from frontline service practitioners and expert academics as well as a series of workshops to further explore the topics addressed during the day.
Keynote speakers will be: Jackie Lynton, Head of Transformation at the NHS Horizons Group - NHS Improving Quality (the national improvement body in England); Lisa Rodrigues CBE, writer and mental health campaigner; and Lena Dominelli, Professor of Applied Social Sciences at Durham University.
