Apparently, it’s not too early to shell out big bucks for a piece of relatively recent cinematic history — unless you’re ready to classify Fast and the Furious as something else. The original movie hit theaters in the summer of 2001 and not only managed to launch the careers of actors Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, but injected car racing culture directly into the mainstream.
Mecum Auctions out of Indianapolis recently auctioned off the 1993 Toyota Supra from the movie, the very car Walker’s character Brian O’Connor was behind the wheel of in the final racing scene opposite Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and his 1970 Dodge Charger.
The winning bid for this piece of Hollywood history was $185,000, MotorAuthority reported.
Since this MkIV Supra was just one of several made for the film by Eddie Paul of The Shark Shop in El Segundo, it may not be the last to hit the auction block.
The sold Supra is not exactly the speedy and juiced up racer the movie makes it out to be. MotorAuthority reports it’s a “bone stock” non-turbo, 3.0-liter model with power in the 230 hp range. Of course, it does get style points for the Bomex body kit, APR wing, and unique graphics, created by Modern Image in San Diego.
Mecum has also auctioned off more vintage cars: a 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster went for $1 million; a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona coupe sold for $775,000, while an original matching numbers 1965 Shelby GT350 notched $355,000.
