That the Camaro brand resonates with car enthusiasts the world over doesn’t really need to be said. The car is steeped in tradition over decades thanks to its place as one of the brighter points of GM’s Chevrolet brand line-up.
Chevy is not timid about touting the Michigan-built machine being a leader of its segment over the last five years and with today’s introduction of the new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, it’s putting its proverbial foot forward — and in quite a measured-yet-spectacular way, if we may add.
So what’s new in the 2016 Camaro that makes it stand apart and be considered in the same vein as that yellow one in that first Transformers movie?
For starters, the 2016 models – and there are several variants, but they share most characteristics – weigh 200 pounds less than their immediate predecessor, which is thanks to those detailed Detroit engineers looking to improve on an already improved hot American ride.
The six-generation Camaro is also packing some serious power in the engine department.
Chevrolet is offering no less than six all-new powertrain combinations. The starter is the new 2.0L Turbo, which is SAE-certified at 275 hp (205 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. (400 Nm). This model of the Camaro impresses in the fuel efficiency department with a 30 mpg on the highway rating, per Chevrolet parent company, the almighty General Motors. It’s still a fast and sporty car though: 0-60 mph is reached under 6 seconds, Chevy touts.
If you’re a discerning customer who wants more power, your options include the all-new 3.6L V-6 and the LT1 6.2L V-8, which sports quite the specs with SAE-certified 455 horsepower (339 kW) and generates 455 lb.-ft. of torque (617 Nm). These, but the way, make “for the most powerful Camaro SS ever,” per Chevy.
This being the 2016 Camaro, Chevrolet doesn’t spare technology for driver safety and comfort. These range from new Driver Mode Selector to a customizable instrument cluster to an “ambient lighting feature.”
