No Sodium Taco Seasoning

No Sodium Taco Seasoning

One of my favorite things to eat is tacos! It was a staple in my house growing up. Especially a recipe for Taco Pie that my Mom made for us. It is the ultimate comfort food, along with the Chicken Enchiladas that she would make for us. The problem is that there is a lot of hidden salt in the one major ingredient of most homemade taco recipes. That little packet of taco seasoning. The average sodium content in a range of regular taco seasoning packs from most brands is 350 to 575 mg. That is why we need to have low or no sodium taco seasoning.

What about Reduced Sodium Taco Packets?

There are several companies that offer a reduced sodium packet that you can get at the grocery store, but this is one instance where taking the time to prepare a batch of your own at home is not only a wise investment, but an extremely tasty one as well.

A huge problem with many of the store bought packets, like Mrs. Dash or Taco Bell, they use Potassium Chloride as a salt replacement. If you are a heart, kidney, liver, or high blood pressure patient, you can not use products with Potassium Chloride as it negatively interacts with our medications.

Dak’s Spices has a Salt Free Bottled taco seasoning (enter the code HACKING SALT at checkout for 10% off and free shipping) that is very good. I still prefer to make my own.

Is It Hard to Make Your Own Seasoning?

This is my recipe to make no sodium taco seasoning. Once complete, you can save it in a jar or plastic container with a lid. The store bought packages of taco seasoning is 1.25 oz. of seasoning equals 2.5 tablespoons of this mix, but in my recipes I use a full 3 tablespoons of the mix. I also use the “snack” size zipper lock bags and divide the mix ahead of time into the bags for ease of use when cooking meals during the week. You can tweak this recipe as you wish. I like a bit of heat so I use red pepper which can be left out for milder palettes.
