‘Yorkshire Bloody Yorkshire’: Event to discuss the Northern experience
The event, entitled ‘Yorkshire Bloody Yorkshire’, will take place at Weetwood Hall on Thursday 23 April, from 5.30-8.30pm. It aims to offer new ways of understanding Northernness and how it is promoted, consumed, represented, and experienced.
Karl Spracklen, Professor of Leisure Studies at Leeds Beckett, will present his research into the literary and heritage tourism of the South Pennines, including popular tourist areas such as Hebden Bridge, Haworth and Ilkley; whilst Dr Katy Shaw will explore how, why and with what effect David Peace’s Red Riding novels represent Yorkshire as a place apart from the rest of the UK, and the representation of its dark underside during the 1970s and 1980s.
Emma Butcher, a PhD student at the University of Hull and co-curator for the Brontë Parsonage Museum, will also share the details of the museum’s upcoming exhibition: ‘The Brontës, War and Waterloo’.
Gabby Riches, co-organiser of the event and PhD student at Leeds Beckett, said: “Our event, ‘Yorkshire Bloody Yorkshire’, aims to highlight how place and culture are important aspects of the tourism experience. The research that will be presented relates to how tourism promotion and policies have shaped our imaginations of Yorkshire, and how particular representations of the North have impacted on how landscapes and histories are consumed.
“We hope to bring together culture, tourism and leisure practitioners, policy makers, and students and academics interested in literary and heritage tourism, constructions of place, and socio-cultural representations of Yorkshire.”
Tickets to attend the ‘Yorkshire Bloody Yorkshire’ event are £10 for students, £13 for Tourism Society members and £16 for non-members. This includes a buffet supper and networking opportunities.
The event is presented by the Tourism Society Yorkshire in partnership with the Media and Place Research Cluster and International Centre for Research Events, Tourism and Hospitality (ICRETH) at Leeds Beckett University.
The Media and Place Research Cluster brings together Leeds Beckett academics and practitioners investigating questions of media and place in international, national and local contexts in the fields of media, cultural, televisual and leisure studies, art and photography, cultural geography and cultural policy. It aims to create a network of knowledge exchange in which a local public audience joins with international scholars and practitioners in order to explore debates and creative activities about the significance of place.
