Newcastle United FC plays host to Leeds Beckett students
Led by Sports Therapist and Senior Lecturer, Ashley Jones, the team have been working at various professional football clubs throughout the summer, collecting valuable physiological testing data to assist with injury prevention and return-to-play measures.
Ashley explained: “As a university we are immensely proud of the links we have in professional sport and the placement opportunities that they provide for our students. By undertaking a placement, students gain valuable experience and learn employability skills that they will not learn in a classroom. They also provide an opportunity to network and form relations with potential employers in what can be a competitive and challenging field.
“Working with professional football teams, including Newcastle United, has given our students an insight into one of the important roles undertaken by sports therapists, and has allowed them the opportunity to improve their knowledge of data collection, which will only help them as they move through their academic studies.
“The students were a credit to the University, working long hours and showing excellent theoretical and communicative skills in busy, often problematic environments.”
Rachel Leech, MSc Sports Therapy student, commented: “This was a unique and enjoyable experience in a professional sporting environment. I was able to put my anatomy and physiology knowledge into practice, whilst also gaining new skills in the area of physiological testing to identify injury risk.”
Level five BSc (Hons) student, Jo-Jo Asomaning Boafo, added: “The testing was a great success. It was really useful to learn and use innovative testing procedures which will have a huge impact in injury prevention within professional sport.”
