Players of the Week -- Oct. 17
RICHMOND, Va. (October 17, 2011) -- CAA Football announced its Player of the Week honorees, Monday, Oct. 17. Four individuals earned honors after showcasing superb efforts in contests played in Week 7 of the 2011 season, including Maine's Jordan Waxman, Towson's Terrance West and William and Mary's Jonathan Grimes and Marcus Hyde.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week - Jonathan Grimes, RB, William and Mary
Grimes finished the Tribe's 24-10 win over New Hampshire with a career-best 323 all-purpose yard total earning him CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors. The senior, who with a career-best 169 rushing yards, became William and Mary's all-time leader during the victory. Grimes also hauled in two of his three catches for touchdowns. The All-American's scoring receptions came on plays of 72 and 50 yards, pushing his receiving total to 126 yards on the day. Grimes currently ranks fourth on the league's all-time all-purpose yardage list having accumulated 6,733 yards in his career for the Tribe.
CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week - Marcus Hyde, DE, William and Mary
Hyde turned in a record-setting day for the Tribe defense helping him pick up CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week honors. The senior totaled five sacks for a total of 32 yards setting the Tribe single-game record and marking the most single-game sacks in the CAA Football era. Hyde finished the day with nine tackles, six of which came behind the line of scrimmage, while also forcing a fumble and breaking up a pass. Impressively, Hyde's halftime total of four sacks equaled the CAA Football-era single-game record last done by Richmond's Lawrence Sidbury against Montana in the 2008 National Championship game.
CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week - Jordan Waxman, P, Maine
Waxman logged CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week honors by averaging 34.9 yards a punt in the Black Bears' 27-21 win over visiting Rhode Island. The senior dropped five of his seven boots inside of the Ram 20-yardline, and surrendered just nine Rhode Island punt return yards on the day. The biggest highlight of Waxman's performance came late in the third quarter when his 49-yard punt scooted out of bounds at the URI three-yardline. On the ensuing possession Black Bear linebacker Vinson Givans picked off a third-down pass inside the five and returned it for touchdown, proving to be the difference in the ballgame for Maine.
CAA Football Rookie of the Week - Terrance West, RB, Towson
West picked up his second-straight and third CAA Football Rookie of the Week accolade of the season following a two-touchdown performance in Towson's 39-35 come-from-behind win at Old Dominion. The Baltimore, Md., native rushed for a career-best 148 yards on just 16 carries. The frosh, who has now amassed 11 touchdowns on the season, found paydirt for the Tigers using big plays early Saturday including a 47-yarder and a 54-yarder both in the first quarter. West, coming off a four-TD game against Richmond last weekend, has scored six times in the last two games for Towson.
