New Psychology professors announced at Leeds Beckett
Dr Georgina Jones will join Leeds Beckett as Professor of Health Psychology and Dr Gijsbert Stoet will take up the position of Professor of Cognitive Psychology.
Speaking about the appointments, Professor Ieuan Ellis, Pro Vice Chancellor at Leeds Beckett, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Georgina and Gijsbert to Leeds Beckett. With established international profiles and specialist expertise, their appointments reflect the growing strengths of our applied psychology research programmes as we build towards REF2021, as well as our commitment to excellent research-informed undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.”
Dr Georgina Jones joins Leeds Beckett from the University of Sheffield and is a world-leading researcher focusing on quality of life measurement and psychometrics, particularly within reproductive medicine. She is currently involved in several high profile studies funded by the National Institute for Health Research, the Health Technology Assessment and the Medical Research Council. She is also currently leading a prestigious grant from Yorkshire Cancer Research on the development and evaluation of fertility preservation decision aid for women with cancer and a large international study concerned with measuring the burden of treatment for patients living with a primary immunodeficiency.
Georgina is a past Associate Editor for the journal Health and Quality of Life Outcomes, and is an Associate Member of the Health Service Research Unit at the University of Oxford.
Speaking about her new role, Dr Georgina Jones said: “I am delighted to be joining Leeds Beckett University in this new role. I feel really excited to have the opportunity to become a member of the psychology group and join the University during this very exciting phase in its development.”
Dr Gijsbert Stoet has established an outstanding international reputation for his research in gender differences in thought and behaviour, the psychology of learning, as well as in meta-cognitive processes, such attention and executive control. His research aims to improve our understanding and reduce the performance gaps between boys and girl in school which can limit career opportunities and life chances. Gijsbert is currently a Reader at the University of Glasgow and has received grants from the Economic and Social Research Council, the National Institutes of Health, German Science Foundation (DFG), Max-Planck-Society, James S. McDonnell Foundation, British Academy and Nuffield Foundation.
Dr Gijsbert Stoet said: "I am extremely excited to start working at Leeds Beckett University. Over the past years, Leeds Beckett has made enormous investments in its facilities, teaching resources and research. Therefore, it is a fantastic opportunity to join the University at this point and to play a leading role in the psychology team."
Professor John Craig, Head of the School of Social Sciences at Leeds Beckett, added: “Gijsbert and Georgina are great additions to our Psychology team and will further strengthen the vibrant research and teaching culture of the School.
