Massive flooding Sunday night in D.C. submerged cars, maybe with people inside, reports WTOP:
A flash flood in D.C. Sunday night brought massive flooding, submerging cars and possibly trapping people inside.
The D.C. Fire Department is responding to flooding at Rhode Island and Florida avenues NW at 1st and 2nd streets. Several cars are underwater and D.C. Fire says people may be trapped in their cars.
DC fire officials tell 9 News three occupied vehicles were trapped in the the high water. Occupants from two of the vehicles managed to free themselves. A man in the third vehicle needed help getting out his car.
On Twitter, Dave Stroup reported that D.C. Fire responded to the flooding with a rescue boat -- and that "All people rescued or self-evacuated."
D.C. Police announced the closure of the 100 block of Rhode Island Avenue in both directions and that parts of Kalorama and Champlain Streets had also been closed, all due to flooding.
Flooding also shut down the Shaw-Howard University Metro Station -- here's a dramatic photo of the tracks under water.
As noted by the Washington Post, this is the third time that some D.C. neighborhoods -- like Bloomingdale -- have flooded this summer.
At 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, the Post noted that while the flash flood warning had been over for over an hour, "Scattered showers continue into the overnight, some could be moderate to heavy."
